Urban market amplifies strong species selectivity in Amazonian artisanal fisheries

چکیده

Abstract Despite Amazonia possessing the highest freshwater biodiversity on Earth, urban landing data show how huge fishing pressure is placed only a dozen species. However, truly characterising fishery and understanding drivers of species selectivity challenging, given neglect artisanal activity, who may catch most Amazon’s fish. We register 824 trips by interviewing fishers in their rural riverside communities. use these to characterise Rio Purus, main fish source sub-system for largest city (Manaus), investigate factors determining composition. Fishers caught 80 species, yet just four made up over half harvested biomass. Urban markets appear drive greater selectivity, with significantly lower diversity commercial compared subsistence catches. Fish composition varied both seasonally geographical remoteness from Manaus. The spatial turnover appears be driven access, more commercially important dominating where Manaus-based fish-buyers frequent. Our partially explain observed overfishing some particularly as Amazonians now live areas.

Artisanal Fisheries Research: A Need for Globalization?

Given limited funds for research and widespread degradation of ecosystems, environmental scientists should geographically target their studies where they will be most effective. However, in academic areas such as conservation and natural resource management there is often a mismatch between the geographic foci of research effort/funding and research needs. The former frequently being focused in...

Artisanal fisheries of the Xingu River basin in Brazilian Amazon.

The present study characterises the commercial fisheries of the basin of the Xingu River, a major tributary of the Amazon River, between the towns of Gurupá (at the mouth of the Amazon) and São Félix do Xingu. Between April, 2012, and March, 2014, a total of 23,939 fishing trips were recorded, yielding a total production of 1,484 tons of fish, harvested by almost three thousand fishers. The ana...

Effects of river impoundment on ecosystem services of large tropical rivers: embodied energy and market value of artisanal fisheries.

Applying the ecosystem services concept to conservation initiatives or in managing ecosystem services requires understanding how environmental impacts affect the ecology of key species or functional groups providing the services. We examined effects of river impoundments, one of the leading threats to freshwater biodiversity, on an important ecosystem service provided by large tropical rivers (...

Financial comparisons of the artisanal fisheries in Urubupungá Complex in the middle Paraná River (Brazil).

The main objective of this study was a bio-economic survey of artisanal fishing so as to compare average profit of the fishermen, in two different environments (reservoirs and river) and seasons (dry and rainy). To carry out financial comparisons of artisanal fisheries in Urubupungá Complex in the middle Paraná River (Brazil), three habitats were considered: I) Ilha Solteira and Jupiá reservoir...
